Rookie in need of pointers
I am a rookie to the ice climbing world,(on the ice for first time at icefest) I am hoping to get pointers from the forum for myself and others like myself on issues like, areas to hone in skills, things to keep in mind, etc. Is there anywhere someone could safely go alone and sort of "boulder" on ice, and just practice technique safely? Any input would be great and much appreciated.
Thanks,
Casey

th new climbing gym
Thanks for the info, I have considered signing up at the new gym in Bozeman. I have heard nothing but good about it (except that it might be a little busy in the evenings). Anyone have any comments about the new gym?

Casey,
The rock gym is a great place to develop strength and confidence for the ice, especially pre-season.
Boulder on overhanging walls on big holds. Emphasize the "lock-off" by pulling your body straight into the wall. Try to maintain contact all the way through your body to maximize core-strength. Look for balanced positions and let go with alternating arms to really push this excercise. Relax and hang on straight arms letting your butt drop all of the way.
Doing this will not only get you stronger, but it will develop more efficient movement technique, which will allow you to dance up those grade 5 pillars. See you at the gym!

Thanks Brad,
Does any one know the current conditions at "Cottonmouth"?
Thanks for the info,

You might also try the climb "Cottonmouth" in the Bridger Range. You won't be able to do much traversing or meet people but if/when access to Hyalite becomes an issue, Cottonmouth is an alternative with a nice hike and also allows a TR setup, if you know how to self-belay.
You can find beta on this climb here: http://firstascentpress.com/add_info.html

Thanks Conrad,
You are always great help, and truly an inspiration to me. It shows great character when "the top dog" is the first to reply to some poor rookie ice climber.
Thanks for the info,

Tips
Greetings Casey,
Your best bet on improving technique is to visit the lower Genesis climbing area. The left hand side is gentle and the right side being more demanding. How far you want to boulder off the deck is your call, yet by traversing you'll be able to get a few swings in. If you have the skills needed to self belay on a rope you can walk around and set up a system. Know your set up. Gravity plays for keeps. :!:
You'll probably meet like minded climbers who, by and large, are keen to share a rope and technique.
Climb safe,
Conrad
