Sleeping Giant

Had a fun day trenching our way up to the Sleeping Giant!  Lots of snow wallowing and wishing we were on skis (no need now though! :) ) brought us to a short but interesting pitch of secluded ice. The top was pretty hollow with a large hole to skirt around or scamper over.

Definitely a fun day off the beaten path!  Most of the approach is void of avalanche danger but the slopes immediately below the base are exposed. We didn't have any collapsing or cracking but one should still take care. Some quick hand pits revealed a 3/4" ice crust below the new snow, and an improvised compression test with poles ended with a CT21 on large facets beneath the crust.......take it for what it's worth!

Regardless....it was a great day in a not often traveled location!
