Pine Creek Road

Hi friends. Just wanted to drop a note on an experience we had yesterday traveling back from pine creek. The last stretch of road just before hitting the pavement was drifted to the point that two vehicles in front of us were stuck in the drifted section which spanned probably 1/4 of a mile in distance. The vehicle I was in as well as a subaru behind us asked permission from a house at the corner before the drift to drive on her property to circumnavigate the drifted secton of forest service road. She hesitated, but granted us permission. Unfortunately the road we thought we were on did not have distinctive tracks, and we ended up roaming through a couple of fields before reaching the paved road. We were soon confronted by a couple, who were apparently different property owners of land we had crossed. These people were rightfully upset, as we had trespassed on their property. What prompted me to post this information, however, was that they had had this experience several times before. Apparently they frequently are approached by people stuck in this section, many of whom have been climbers and other recreationists. They told us the forest service discourages them from plowing the road even to access their own driveways, as it encourages winter access to this area. Had the party I was with known that this road frequently drifts to this extent, we may have noted the drifting on the way in, and decided not to spend the day up pine creek. I personally do not want climbers to get a bad rap with the local landowners for being the foolish partys who are constantly getting stuck. This situation turned into an ordeal for the property owners, who took it upon themselves to return to the other stranded vehicles and offer assistance. The vehicle originally stuck was a large 4wd truck, about as worthy of the conditions as you can get. It was buried up to its bumper. In summary, if the road up to pine creek is drifted on your way in, you may not get out, or worse in a need to get out you may cause unneccessary inconveniences to others. Perhaps this is already well-known info, but my party and all those stuck were in a state of ignorance, so hopefully this might increase the knowledge of others less informed. ps blue is in nicely

Rode was fine all the way in yesterday 12/26. Could easily make it in a subaru. Not recomended for any 2wd vehicals due to the uphill sections.

Good shape, one lane only most of the way, about 4" new snow, passing anyone could be challenging.

I was just down the valley (1/19) and the wind is blowing with new snow which usually means the road will be drifted in. I'm heading that way tomorrow, will post if it's good or impassable.

Caution----Extreme driving conditions exist up Pine Creek! The snow is deep and soft. We went in today with 4wd and chains all around, and it was still a minor epic. Wish I had a snowmobile. The road is somewhat packed in now, 1 vehicle had been up before us, and now our track, but Pine Creek drifts in fast. I advise parking at the turnout on the bench (I think this is legal) and walking the rest of the way, but some of you may be more intrepid drivers than I am. Good luck and happy climbing!

went in later today, total epic, you can make it in with a subi if you dont get pulled off the road into the ditch in the two places before the campground, and the snow doesnt blow out the trail in the first field. be safe and bring avy shovels

we walked in from the highway on Friday - very impressive wind slab most of the way in. Trailbreaking up to the falls was hollow. Both gullies are fat but have not slid lately. The wind was blowing straight up both. In all, a good workout. The landowner was working the road with a rotary on our way out but there is no chance he will open it all the way, maybe to the top switchback.

Went up pine creek yesterday. It is possible to drive to the parking lot with a good four wheel drive (not a subaru) and chains. The ranchers blew out the bottom of the road and have run tractors up to where the trees begin. If they had'nt done that it would be drifted in the rest of the year. If you can, get up there and help hog that road out!

Climbed pine creek falls on Saturday the 9th. The road had drifted pretty bad and was impassable. An SUV after us tried digging the first drift, but got shut down 50 yards later. We walked from just before the sign that says "private property 2.1 miles". Ice on Pine Creek falls was in good shape, with solid thunker swings. The gullies had a lot of snow above them. We decided not to risk it.

The Pine Creek road is subaru-able to within 1/2 mile of the campground; to where the road enters the forest. From there, gets more than a little western. Good solid parking and easy turn around although this may change with warming weather. Ice all looks awesome!

made it all the way to the parking lot today but had to use the winch to get out . definitely need 4wd the last 1/2 mile. ice was still in decent shape
