SMCC statement re: illegal Hyalite cabin

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 12/08/2004 - 15:58
December 23, 2005 The Southwest Montana Climbers? Coalition (SMCC) and the overwhelming majority of local climbers resoundingly condemn the construction and use of an illegal cabin in Hyalite Canyon. Upper Hyalite Canyon affords exceptional opportunities for ice climbing that are simply not found elsewhere, and it has been a regional center of climbing activity for decades.

More Kudos for the Forest Service

We took the Junior Mountaineering Team out for a mission on Saturday and the last beta we got on the road conditions were from Tuesday. We decided not to take any chances and snowmobile in from the fishing access. We arrived early AM in the dark and missed the one sign that said no snowmobiles allowed. The road was definitely driveable - though there was one large 4X4 truck stuck on the shoulder.

Airborne Ranger

On Friday mi hermano y yo leaped into Hylite for a quick run up to Cleo?s but found a team breaking a fine trail ahead of us with the same objective in mind. To our surprise there was more than just Cleo's to accommodate two parties. Airborne Ranger is making a fine showing at the moment, hanging proudly all the way down with a very fat upper section making this climb a 5+ gem of great challenging ice. This is one not to miss if you are in the neighborhood.

Road & Trail Conditions now posted

I have a website thats just getting going and I am posting road and trail conditions as they are reported to us by email. The goal is that the community have a central location for posting the conditions for non groomed trails (Blackmore, Fawn Pass, Brackett Creek, Bear Canyon, Yellowstone 191 access, etc.) as well as road conditions. Hopefully the site will be a resource for Trail and Trip reports that fit between the Avalanche Report and the Bridger Nordic Grooming Report. Thanks, Kevin www.outsidemontana.com

Good Looking One

Submitted by Ted on Tue, 01/08/2008 - 15:10
Climbed Good Looking One just before New Years. The ice was down a bit below the top of the basalt columns, so mostly dry tooling for the first 20 or 30 feet. I think I had four pieces of rock gear, including a fixed angle, before I started placing screws.

New Route East Hyalite

On Wednesday, Jan 2nd Sam Magro and I climbed a nice ice flow we had eyed a couple weeks prior while skinning around upper East Hyalite. The first pitch entailed a thin, hollow, blobby smear up to an interesting dagger encounter. Although this dagger was short, it had some wild moves getting around to the front. This pitch was about 35 meters long and WI 5. The next pitch climbed thin and cool mixed ground into a snow and ice gully with rock steps. Very alpinish. 70 meters, M4. Both pitches had thought provoking gear, but decent at the crux dagger.
