M2, Scepter

Mummy 2 and the Scepter were in good shape Saturday the 8th.  M2 was wet in spots but the Scepter was dry despite all the warm weather.  They both seem a bit anemic given the wet year we are having and the size of some of the other classics in the canyon.  That new approach from G1 is really nice.

Looking across the canyon we couldn't see Airborne Ranger.  Not sure if we should be able to see it from M2.  Does anyone know if it fell.  It was big last week when we were over there.

Lots of people at G1 when we left (around 20?).  Someone in the parking lot said they were wounded warriors.  It was nice to see so many people enjoying the ice.

It was snowing hard and the road was starting to get deep when we left around 2pm.

Took the trail above G1 to Scepter on Saturday 1/22 and had to break trail for a lot of it.  It could use some more traffic to keep it packed, so go on and get after it!   We lost track of the trail and flagging at one point so we started up a drainage... wrong one, sorry about the misleading tracks. The trail leads directly to the base of Mummy II so if you're like me and it's your first time there, just keep moving along the mountainside.

Snow at the base of M2 was pretty poor with at least two crust layers under the fresh powder, didn't explore the snow above too much but it's probably similar. It was snowing and pretty windy up there in the morning so the fresh stuff got blown around a bit too.

Both climbs were looking fat and offered plenty of options. Mummy II was mostly dry and has some nice steeper ice on the left or some mellower routes on the right. Scepter actually looks pretty mellow on the right, and also pretty wet (sticky). The left side was much drier and brittle and more of a challenge, but nothing like the photos I've seen before.
