We had one of the greatest Hyalite days I've ever had the pleasure to enjoy on New Year's Day, 2007. Although all we did was the "Thrill is Gone," the route conditions are about the best I've ever seen them (read: not as fat nor as thin as I've encountered but engaging throughout) and the day was perfectly calm, somewhat warm, bluebird above, snow ghosts all around in the forest, and only the sounds of birds and climbers across the canyon (punctuated, of course, by one or two snowmobiles). This year, I've seen more cliff swallows and other flocks throughout Hyalite than I've ever remembered seeing in past years (not to mention seeing a bobcat on Christmas Day) and yesterday at the Unnamed Wall was no exception. It is sad to think that it may be the last time we can ever ring in the New Year is such a way.
