Here is a quick update for those wanting to get on Winter Dance or climbs in that area. Substantial volumes of ice have broken off Winter Dance in the past week. On Tuesday, Dec. 28, there was a flow of water streaming down the left side of the climb. The first pitch and belay at the end of the bolt ladder suffered a continuous deluge. This continual spray, unlike that which recently showered this website, was unavoidable by anyone hoping to climb. The flow was not likely melt-water since temps were in the low 20?s. With the stream we observed and forcasted lower temps, ice on Winter Dance should continue to grow and rebuild for a while.

On the same day, Alex?s right-hand solo route was found in excellent WI 4 conditions. The climb sits in an amphitheatre providing a spectacular view of Palace Butte and the massive cirque behind Twin Falls. There is no easy way to access this remote climb or Alex?s left-hand route (also in good condition). The best approach is probably to ascend the ridge on the left side of the stream drainage. This stream crosses the trail at a washed out culvert. These are highly recommended climbs for those seeking an aerobic adventure high above the valley floor.
