Beartooth Mountains Ice Conditions

Description

Have you gotten into the North side of the Beartooth Mountains around Red Lodge yet? Since this area is so far from Cooke City, ( and by popluar demand!) I have decided to add this forum. California Ice, West Rosebud Canyon, Rock Creek, the Stillwater drainage, ....

dry route to the left of Hellroaring falls.

I think it would be worthy to put in a mixed line to the left of Hellroaring falls about 30 feet from the ice. It looks like it would be a very moderate mixed line that would require bolts for protection. Would anyone be upset if I bolted a route on the rock, has this line already been done on gear? Cheers, Loren

Spaghetti & Meatballs

Posting this on behalf of Daniel Burson. Having backed off that chockstone pitch, I can say it is a fine piece of climbing.

On March 16, Aaron Mulkey, Shawn Gregory and I set out to climb the pitches above Spaghetti Falls in East Rosebud, hoping we could take the route to the plateau. I had previously climbed three distinct steps and pitches above the main flow but had not explored the remaining 1200ft or so of elevation left to climb.

Clarks Fork Canyon

If climbing classic, long ice is one of your new year's resolutions, then don't miss Leaning Tree and Dutch Charile Fall in the Box of the Clarks Fork right now!  These are two of the best continuous flows of ice anywhere in North America, and they are in fat!  Leaning Tree goes at smooth WI 4 while Duthch Charlie goes at easy grade 5.  Combined they add up to more that 450 meters of ice which are easily climed in one long day.  A must do for anyone looking to explore long routes.

send me a message if you want beta on the approach and parking.

CA Ice, Road conditions to Alpine?

Submitted by gato_loco on Wed, 12/15/2010 - 10:20

I was thinking about heading over to East Rosebud on Friday for a go at California Ice. Just curious if anyone has been up there this season, what road conditions are like getting to Alpine, trail conditions, how far down the creek is frozen, etc. Any recent reports from the area? Thanks for any information you can provide!
