How's the Snow?

Beartooth Butte

Skied southern couloir on May 8th and found the conditions to be very stable and really soft. Skied the Middle couloir on May 9th; The couloir had a decent cornice. The  newer snow did not want to bond to old base layer so wet slough avalanches were an issue. Over all great skiing.

Bridgers Snow Conditions 4.28.09

I went up to Frazier on Tuesday April 28th in the middle of the snowstorm. We wanted to ski in the Frazier Cirque, but found poor avalanche conditions. It was quite clear that there was a lot of wind loading and we found the instability on these wind slabs. We dug a pit at the top of a North-facing chute that drops down into Frazier. The first column released at the most recent crust while I was isolating it. The second and third Compression tests revealed CT5 and CT7 both quality 1.

Red Lodge

I skiied a bowl above Rock Creek two days ago.  I skinned up the Hell roaring road for half a mile and then up Misery Creek to the plateau.  I skiied the North Facing edge of the bowl back down to Misery Creek but the runs directly back to the Hell Roaring Road look good also.  This was a super easy approach.  Looks like the beartooths are finnally starting to acculmulate some snow.

Hellmouth

Ben, Ryan and I skied the Hellmouth off of Alex Lowe Peak on Saturday.  It was a memorable descent and snow conditions in the couloir were fantastic.  There were some slopes on the approach that were a little sketch but we were able to avoid them through some strategic wallowing.  Inside the couloir there was a neat thumb of ice that would make for a great climb.  Although maybe not worth a trip in its own, I'd wished we'd had some equipment to climb it before trudging back to the car.  An incredible day considering the dearth of snow that we've had lately.  Easy access via the plowed road

Backcountry skiing near Bozeman

Howdy folks.  I'm just getting into backcountry skiing and wondering if anyone can suggest some good areas to check out in the Bozeman area.  Not asking you to give up your super-secret hideout, but just some general ideas would be great.  Like trailheads, how to get there, how long it takes to skin in different places.  If anyone has any thoughts please let me know.

Btw, great to see there is a place here to discuss MT skiing now.  I looked around for other websites but haven't found much.  Thanks!

Jewel Basin

There is still auto access to the trail head for Jewel Basin.  Skied the east face of Mt. Aeneas, then back up for a shot off the North Face into the Jewel. Then traverse to the notch with a ski down the trail to the car.... Not bad for November.  Conditions were wind blown hard pack with 2-3 inches of fresh snow on top of a 12 - 14 inch base.  Some icy conditions exist in the lower chutes.   Avalanche conditions were mild but will change with the next event with all the hard pack and boiler plate that exists now...
