Beartooth Mountains Ice Conditions

Have you gotten into the North side of the Beartooth Mountains around Red Lodge yet? Since this area is so far from Cooke City, ( and by popluar demand!) I have decided to add this forum. California Ice, West Rosebud Canyon, Rock Creek, the Stillwater drainage, ....

On Sunday Dave, Dano, Mark and I went up to the west rosebud and had a look around.  I rapped into The Spillway and found the route in pretty poor conditions.  So we headed on back down the trail and climbed Anti-Duct.  The ice was dry and a bit brittle and Dave had a nice lead on the crux pillar.  On Monday, Dave and I climbed Spaghetti Falls and found thin steep ice for 20 feet down low, then super sticky ice for the rest of the route.  Dan and Mark reported similar sticky conditions on Upper Rosebud Falls and great climbing.  Cali Ice looked thin but probably good to go.  None the the cl

After crashing out at the trail head Ty Nygaard, Justin Griffin and I woke at 4am and wandered in the direction of ice dragons. The walk is lengthy but a pleasant tennis shoes experience most of the way. The bears face loomed in the darkness, threatening to maul dawn suitors, but benevolently allowing penetration up a chossy gully to its side. We abandoned rucksacks at the base of the descent ridge and euro styled it to the base of our objective, the obvious hanging smear to the right of ice dragons. We pulled on our winter pants and climbed.

Funeral for a Friend

[img]http://montanaice.com/forums/user_images/me%20mt%20ice.JPG[/img] [img]http://montanaice.com/forums/user_images/mt%20ice.JPG[/img] We hiked up to Funeral for a Friend on sat 18 Oct 08, the snow conditions made the boulder field rather miserable, as the pictures show the ice was good, the lower boulders were fun we were able to climb on ice and rock from the big boulders at the bottom of the gully to the base of the main climbing.
