California Ice

Climbed California Ice on 12/15/04 in fat fat fat conditions. Approach drainage was completely iced in from about 500' above the valley floor, and the climb itself was huge and dry. Descent was safe from avalanche danger. Times: 2.5 hours from car to base of climb; 2.5 hours for climb; 1 hour descent to base of route; 1 hr 50 min back to car. A good day out!

Spaghetti Falls + pics

The Beartooths' winds were, and are, HOWLING. Made climbing interesting. Spaghetti Falls is in good condition with a decent approach. One of the coolest places to visit. If you are lucky with clear skies, the views are incredible. Beautiful granite faces all around. It appears a party walked off to the right, but if you bring two lines, it is a full 200' rap from a sling around the upper boulders. You're the best, Mr. Url.

We played on Hellroaring Falls last Wednesday (12-1-04). For coming from billings, it's an easy day out. Still early season conditions, but forming well at 3+ up the main flow. The left corner is starting out well with this year with nice column flowing over the roof. Pretty much a solo to the halfway point, then gear gets better. It's going at solid 4 right now, will thicken nicely with cooler temps. The trail up to the falls has been cleared of deadfall, making the approach cush. Thanks to whoever did all the chopping. Sand Dune is beginning to form.

Red Lodge Ice

Wasn't sure where to put this, i figured of all the sections cooke was the closest. went into the west fork of Rock Creek this weekend to look for some ice. Walked into the main campground a few miles up, noticing multiple formations way up on the north side of the valley. walked past a few thin looking formations that we bypassed but would check out again on the way down. walked south towards the White Tail peak and saw a very nice looking line only about 1/2 mile from the meadow. we walked up to 2 steller pitches, each about 50 meters.
