California Ice-Jan 16th

Submitted by Phil on Wed, 01/23/2008 - 17:04
At the beginning of last week's storms, Matt Herman and I heard the approach to California Ice was all the way to the trail. We didn't get there until the first wave snow hit and found the approach ice to be quite high up the gully with 6-12 inches of new snow over Beartooth Talus. The slog up took us a little more than 2 hours to the base where we found the ice to be in nicely, but not fat like I'd expected. Even in the cold temps, this flow always drips. It made for a rimey day with the ropes and gear.

Hellroaring Falls

Friends and I climbed Hellroaring falls the other day (Dec18); its in fat condition. I placed a snarg on lead, the dirty buggers are elusively hard to hit with micro hammers on a bentshaft tool. Hopefully the approach trail will see some chainsaw action - there is probably 20 trees to hop over in the span of 1/4 mile. -Olin

climbed cali. thurs 29th ice was in nice a little less than fat conditions. The descent gully was easy filled with hard snow the approach gully was typical with some of that hard snow to speed things up a bit. Also it snowed about 4 inches while climbing, all in all good outing.......oh yea climbed silver wed 28th also in good shape.

west bud

I went for a tour up the West Bud on the evening of the 23rd. Although ice was not my objective, and I am unfamiliar with many of the common waterfall routes, several formations stood out for their aesthetics, albeit lean appearance. About 16? of settled snow provided a sweet moonlit ski up to and around Mystic Lake, which was 90% open and quite full. I would highly recommend an ice outing to the area, but may suggest giving it a week or two before fat conditions could be found.
