Hyalite Ice on October 30th

Submitted by hyonlyfe on Mon, 10/31/2005 - 09:12
Went for a hike in the canyon yesterday. Temperatures were above freezing and the east side was gettng hit with lotsa sun. Both falls of the Twin falls are beginning to form but are thin and not quite the whole way down. There is a small amount of ice on Cleo's. I believe the Dribbles are also getting started. I saw some other formations just beginning to ice up but were very small.

Beehive: no ice (yet)

apparently the snow we had recently melted far faster than i had anticipated. went up to beehive sunday with a couple of friends. did the mixed route on the south side, "all in moderation". boots, crampons, tools, no ice at all--very little running water even. the little pocket snow-fields were pretty small by sunday. but lots of fun to hook 'em, even if i can't swing 'em yet. happy hunting! -J

The Sphinx

Submitted by rockgumby on Mon, 10/10/2005 - 12:54
Made the trip out to the the sphinx this weekend, October 9th. The trail was really muddy, and there was bout 6 or so new inches of snow. The traverse out to the climb was not all that bad but the snow could have been better. Thew first pitch of the Lowe route is still forming, really wet and fragile. the variation to the right has no ice on the bottom 120 of it. The 2nd pitch looked pretty good. I bailed off the first pitch so if anyone gets back up there before me I would appreciate my draw and biners and pitons back. You know good karma and all.

I heard y'all got some snow. anyone been out to climb the sphinx. bet it's in or almost in. Since in live in f'ing portland for now, i really don't want to be the vanguard of alpine failure this early in the season. thoughts, comments, been there?? couldn't figure out which forum to plug this, so spray seemed the most appropriate. Thanks, -Mike Layton
