Hello everyone, I'm sure you are all anxious to hear the latest news on the ice climbing community actions regarding the Gallatin National Forest Travel Plan. Quite a lot has been going on behind the scenes but we are still up against the wall and are required to make a formal appeal which is due February 1, 2007. In a nutshell, the Forest indicated to Bill Murdock (County Commissioner & ice climber) they may be willing to reach a discretionary compromise without an appeal as it is in the Supervisor's authority to do so.

Dying in the Mountains

Perhaps it?s the end of one year and the beginning of another, or maybe it?s that the holidays are over and I?m feeling a little melancholia, but as I think back over this past year it occurred to me that we in the climbing community have forever lost some wonderful talent and great friends. Sue Nott, Peter Croft and Charlie Fowler to name but a few. I think we all understand and except (albeit to veering degrees) that risk, or more to the point, the risk of death, is intrinsic to our sport. For those who walk that razors edge and risk much the rewards are beyond mere words.

Rocky Mtn. Front Ice

Went on the rocky mtn. front tour on Saturday 12/23 looking for ice. We made it to Crown Mtn. Falls and Cataract falls outside of Augusta. Roads were good (but icy) to both climbs. Neither climb was in, although both were fairly close. I'd say with a week of cold temps both would be good to go. Left side of Crown mtn. falls might already be topropable-? A bit thin to lead. JC
