CA Ice, Road conditions to Alpine?

Submitted by gato_loco on Wed, 12/15/2010 - 10:20

I was thinking about heading over to East Rosebud on Friday for a go at California Ice. Just curious if anyone has been up there this season, what road conditions are like getting to Alpine, trail conditions, how far down the creek is frozen, etc. Any recent reports from the area? Thanks for any information you can provide!

We were in the west and east rosebud 2 days ago.

The west rosebud:  road was in great shape to the trail head, we climbed the anit duct, it's in great shape and has a trail busted to it (thanks to who ever busted it!).

The east rosebud:  road was in good shape to the lake (the road is drifted the last 1/4 mile and we couldn't reach the trail head).  sand dune falls looks like it collapsed recently but it was trying hard to reform; small falls is in the same condition, not quite touching; hellroaring looks good to go as does falls between.

cheers, Loren

You're welcome, Loren; Rachel and I broke that trail to Antiduct last weekend.  The route was in great shape, really fun up the right side.

As far as East Rosebud, Ari, Tanner, and I went to California Ice last Sunday.  It is the thinnest that I have ever seen it.  There is really only one line, straight up the middle.  Goes at pretty solid WI4.  If you just do the headwall, we put new yellow cord on the pins, head-level on the right wall, for rappels.  The webbing on the tree below looked pretty solid.  The approach gully was a rock scramble to start, then all snow with one step of ice.  Made it a little bit of a slog going up, but if you descend rather than going over the plateau, the way down is deluxe on the snow.  That is my beta, sorry if I rambled.  Good luck out there.

Hey Guys,

Anyone been up to the ice since Daniel on the 24th? Has it bulked up any? Looking to head up there this coming weekend ~the 15th.

Thanks,

Mike

Climbed Cali ice two weeks ago. It is very huge and very wet. Great climbing but finding dry sections was tough that day. Approach gully is all snow with some postholing in the first 500ft. We continued to the top, again all snow mostly hardpack. Found a great descent gully back to the campground with 2000ft of glissading at the nw corner of east rosebud plateau. Couldn't get all the way to the trailhead due to drifts but got within 1/4 mile no problem. Don't think the area has gotten much if any of the recent snow.
