Hi All,
In case folks are headed to Hyalite this weekend, it is advised to be aware of the Bozeman Ice Festival going on this weekend. Friday, December 1 will be at Genesis 1 (GI). Saturday and Sunday, December 2 and 3, will be at GI, GII, Mummy II/Sceptre, and Palisade Falls (and possibly Twin Falls). Sorry for any inconvenience for any body wishing to head to those climbs this weekend.
But don't despair, the best ice year in the last 10 is upon us and there are tons of easy, moderate and hard routes to go do. Here is a brief run down of routes in good shape based on my experience the last week and talking to a few people.
Moderate Routes that are in great shape: Hang Over, Through Four More, Sleeping Giant, Curtains, Slot Corner (a little thin in the middle), Over Easy, Land of the Lost, Dribbles (great shape), Silken Falls, Fat One, Elevator Shaft, The Matrix and Feeding the Cat, The Ampitheatre climbs including Switchback Falls are unusually thin right now but would be great for people wanting that sort of ice cragging. Both Champagne Climbs. Slick Willy and Ice Miser will be good.
Obscure Routes that are in: Kansas Cornfield is as big as it will ever get. I saw people on Solstice last weekend and it looks fat. Equinox is also formed but I'm still unsure the best way to approach these climbs. I think one of the best ways to get there is by climbing Elevator Shaft and traversing up and left. If you are into a long fitness day, the multiple ice lines at The Penthouse are all good. Seeds and Stems looks in. I bet Horsetail Falls should be good as well as the routes around Comet Alley including High Fidelity. Code Red will be in.
Harder Routes: Alpha and Omega. Good Looking One. Magically Delicious. Black Magic. Smear Today Gone Tomorrow might still be climbable. Cleo's is on great shape as is The Shimmey and the easier flow to the left. Airborne Ranger is touching. Dialectric Breakdown is really good. Rumor has it Avalanche Gulch is formed. Responsible Family Men. All the Flanders routes including the rare Narcolepsy are in well. The Climb Above Dribbles is touching down and probably as easy at it ever gets.
Farther afield: Green and Blue Gullies (in Pine Creek) should be good by now. Pine Creek Falls. Cooke City is great as is the East and West Rosebud routes. Sand Dune Falls and Anti-Duct are two particularly good routes not many people go to.
I hope it all helps and thanks to everyone in the community for your support of the Bozeman Ice Festival.
