Sand Dune Falls

Submitted by tooper on Thu, 01/11/2007 - 14:33
Ari and I went up to Sand Dune Jan. 10 and found it pretty big, but not necessarily wet as the other post said. It had a decent cone with apx. 50' of vertical. Good ice. There is one fracture line near the top of the pillar, but it doesn't seem in any danger of falling. I couldn't get the pics to post, Ari or I will try again later. Daniel.

East Rose Update

Daniel Bursom and myself hiked in and ate a little Spaghetti Falls on Saturday. The ice was pretty dry and liked to diner plate. There is very very very little snow in the canyon. The wind storms of a couple weeks ago have knocked a considerable amount of trees over the trail, though the bulk of the damage seems to be within the first half mile of the trailhead. Ice off the Giant's Belly looked gigantic fat. The approach to California Ice appeared to be mostly ice. All routes in the canyon were in good shape, though I can't vouch for Sand Dune falls.

Sticky bud?

We climbed what we called sticky bud yesterday. It is up west rosebud, before the spillway if you take the powerline approach. We couldnt find it in any of the giude books, does any know if it hase been climbed? It is a great route of WI3, and is about 120m long. It looks as if a nice curtin will form for a good 2nd WI4 pitch soon. Ron Pedrosa,Forest Tompson and myself had a great day out. Anti duct, Angies falls, and a few lower Bud routs look great. Diddnt look at the spillway but highly reccomend this new route on youre way to check out the spillway. Follow the powerlines.

West Rosebud

Went to the Spillway on Saturday and despite the 50mph frigid wind, the ice was thin and slushy with lots of water still flowing up top. Given the conditions, we decided not to rap in. Anti-Duct looks to be in great shape, however it may be thin and a bit funky topping out.

Beartooths Ice

Submitted by Highlandtravler on Wed, 11/01/2006 - 23:35
A little more than two weeks ago I hiked up to Ice Dragons in the East Rosebud to find a whole hell of a lot of ice not to mention probably one of the best looking ice lines in the state, Ice Dragons. On Friday Oct. 27 Jordan Mancey and I awoke at an ungodly hour and hiked to the base of the route. The approach is a talus fest as soon as you leave the real trail. Upon reaching Ice dragons we found that, as we figured, the route was thin and out of our current fitness range and would require a rock rack for protection and belays on the first few pitches.

AntiDuct 2-12-06

This is another late entry, but again I doubt the conditions have changed much. Probably gotten even better. Rusty, Daniel, and I drove into West Rosebud on one of those rare windless and cloud-free days in the Beartooths. Even though Red Lodge had a few feet of snow, W Rosebud received only a few inches. So skis were unnecessary. The drive in is well-plowed for the hydropower residence at the trailhead. Antiduct was sweet and solid, in excellent condtion. The second pitch is in technical WI5 conditions.
